How vlan51.com handles personal data: hosting, comments through Giscus and GitHub, cookies, and your rights.
Who we are #
vlan51.com is run by KNET Ltd (“KNET”, “we”, “us”), the data controller for personal data processed through this website. KNET Ltd is registered in England and Wales, company number 10841417. Our registered office is 7 Princes Square, Harrogate, England, HG1 1ND.
What we collect #
When you read the site. Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, processes technical data such as your IP address, browser type and the pages you request, so it can deliver the site and protect it from abuse. We don’t use analytics or advertising tracking, and the site’s fonts and scripts are served from this domain rather than from third parties.
When you comment. Comments are powered by Giscus and stored as GitHub Discussions in the public KNETUK/vlan51-comments repository. To comment, you sign in with your GitHub account. Your GitHub username, profile picture, comment and any reactions are then published publicly on this site and on GitHub. Comments are only loaded when you scroll to them.
How we use it and our lawful basis #
| Purpose | Lawful basis (UK GDPR) |
|---|---|
| Delivering and securing the website | Legitimate interests (operating a secure, reliable website) |
| Publishing and moderating comments you choose to post | Legitimate interests (running a discussion on the guides), at your request |
We don’t use your details for marketing and we never sell your data.
Who we share it with #
- Cloudflare, Inc. (United States, with a global network): hosts this website and provides security and performance services.
- GitHub, Inc. (United States, part of Microsoft): stores comments as GitHub Discussions and handles sign-in. GitHub’s use of your data is covered by the GitHub Privacy Statement.
- Giscus: the open-source comment widget that connects this site to GitHub Discussions. See the Giscus privacy policy.
Where personal data is transferred outside the UK, we rely on the safeguards offered by these providers, such as the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or the UK International Data Transfer Addendum.
Cookies and local storage #
This site doesn’t set cookies of its own. Cloudflare may set strictly necessary cookies to protect the site from bots and abuse. If you sign in to comment, Giscus stores a sign-in token in your browser’s local storage so you stay signed in. Sign out from the comments box, or clear this site’s data in your browser, to remove it.
How long we keep it #
Comments stay published until you delete them or we remove them. Hosting logs are kept by Cloudflare for a short period in line with its own retention policies.
Your rights #
Under UK data protection law you can access, correct or erase your personal data, restrict or object to our processing, and ask for data portability where it applies.
You can edit or delete your own comments at any time on GitHub. For anything else, contact us through the KNET contact form or write to our registered office. We’ll respond within one month.
Complaints #
If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your data, please contact us first. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
