HPE Intelligent Management Center (IMC)

Notes and fixes for HPE Intelligent Management Center (IMC): adding devices, SNMP access errors, alarm tuning, upgrades and Hyper-V monitoring.

HPE Intelligent Management Center (IMC) is a network management station with a difference. I’ve installed it at around 15 customer sites, and its vendor-agnostic approach makes it a good fit for networks with kit from several manufacturers. I’ve used it to monitor Cisco, HPE, Aruba, Juniper, Fortinet, WatchGuard, Blue Coat, Citrix and Windows servers. If a device supports SNMP, IMC can usually manage it.

It does have drawbacks. It’s easy to get lost in the interface and to lose track of pages you swear were there a second ago. Like any management station, it needs ongoing tuning to get the best out of it.

Licensing tip: HPE offers a 60-day trial. Unless you need the Manager of Managers (MoM) features, the Standard edition is usually enough rather than Enterprise. The Standard licence includes 50 devices, and a stacked switch counts as one device.

These guides were written against IMC 7.0 to 7.2. Menu paths and error messages may differ slightly on current releases.
